Under New York’s Licensed Home Care Services Agency (LHCSA) model, you can choose your own caregiver — your paid caregiver must become a New York State–certified Home Health Aide (HHA) or Personal Care Aide (PCA) employed by the agency, and the agency provides the required training and certification at no cost, so a family member or friend can still become your paid aide. By state rule, your spouse, your parent, your child (son or daughter), or a child-in-law cannot be your paid aide. Aides must be 18+ and legally able to work in the U.S.
